A Toronto man who used COVID relief funds to buy and illegally import gun parts from the United States — including a Donald Trump-branded semi-automatic pistol — is now looking at a sentence.

Last fall, on the afternoon of the trial, Devon Pelley pleaded guilty to 10 firearms importation and gun possession charges after Canada Border Services Agency and Ontario Provincial Police seized packages containing A slide of four weapons and barrels in October 2020, sent by mail from Alpharetta, a city in northern Georgia, to a stranger in a budget hotel on Queen Street West in Toronto.

The slides — key parts of a shotgun — matched four firearm frames with triggers that police found in a canvas bag in the laundry room at Pelley's Etobicoke home, which also contained eight high-capacity magazines. .
The 31-year-old "used postal services to commit these crimes," Crown attorney John Rinaldi said in court Thursday as the defendant sat quietly and wept.
But for the intervention of border guards and police, Pelley could have assembled four fully functional handguns capable of hitting the road.
Three of the handguns are Glocks and one is a Glock 19 Gen4 "Trump" replica that has the name and head of the former US President, a US flag design and the title "Keep America Great" on the slide.

Pelley, who had no criminal record prior to these charges, told the judge he had no "malicious" or "evil" motive for wanting handguns and likened it to a car owner's desire to have a rare vehicle in a garage.
Pelley said his "fascination" with guns "came" a few years ago when he visited a gun range. Afterward, he said he tried to get a firearms license but didn't "get a reminder."
Rinaldi asked the judge to reject Pelley's statement that he once tried to get a firearms license.
In October 2020, Pelley received government support from Ontario Jobs and student loans with money distributed during the COVID-19 lockdowns — money he used to pay for gun parts, his lawyer said in court.

Prosecutors are asking for four years in prison. Defense lawyer Deniz Sarikaya is asking for a three-year term - the minimum sentence required under the Criminal Code for importing a prohibited weapon into Canada.
